Overview of the Major

The Broadcasting and Television Directing major aligns closely with the global media industry, which refers to the industrial cluster composed of media entities that disseminate various types of information and knowledge. It is a special industry that produces and disseminates information products in the forms of text, graphics, art, language, video, audio, digital, symbols, etc., as well as provides various value-added services. In the digital era, the media industry is primarily divided into two categories: traditional media industries such as books, newspapers, magazines, films, radio, and television; and new media industries such as the internet, mobile phones, digital publishing, animation, games, electronic newspapers and magazines, mobile newspapers and magazines, digital films, television films, online broadcasting, digital television, mobile television, building television, IPTV, e-commerce, video, social media, instant messaging, wireless value-added services, online reading, display screens, databases, and more.

The media industry clusters related enterprises in the industrial chain, supply chain, and value chain, which can be broadly divided into two major systems: the mainstream media system embedded in the social system and the market-oriented network digital media system. These two systems operate independently while interacting with each other, both possessing industrial attributes and participating in market competition. Based on media forms and business models, the media industry can be further divided into over 20 major categories, such as television, film, radio, newspapers, periodicals, books, converged media, global media, infrastructure media, online video, short video, live streaming, audio, smart outdoor media, smart hardware, local life, e-commerce, vertical media, news and information, social media, and search engines. These 20 major categories can be further subdivided into over 60 minor categories. According to the attributes of the Broadcasting and Television Directing major, its corresponding work areas in the media industry mainly focus on 11 categories related to video content, including television, film, radio, converged media, online video, short video, live streaming, audio, e-commerce, news and information, and social media platforms.

By analyzing the upstream, midstream, and downstream industries in the media industry chain and the job tasks required for their integration, the Broadcasting and Television Directing major has expanded its target job groups by adding a new group, namely the new media and converged media job group. The original three job groups have also derived new positions due to changes in the media environment and the reconstruction of the audiovisual production process. These include early-stage planning and creative job groups (such as broadcast and television program directors, editors, journalists, film and television drama directors, screenwriters, advertising directors, studio directors, media agents, short video directors, online variety show directors, and online film and television drama directors); mid-stage shooting job groups (such as photographers, cameramen, sound engineers, lighting engineers, art designers, action directors, script supervisors, e-commerce live streaming recorders, and short video cameramen); late-stage editing and special effects job groups (such as television program editors, program packaging designers, film editors, colorists, audio mixers, video special effects editors, short video editors, online variety show editors, and online variety show packaging designers); and new media and converged media job groups (such as public account editors, social media editors, new media operators, new media content creators, e-commerce live streaming operators, and video directors).


Training Objectives

This major primarily targets the Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao regions, aiming to cultivate individuals who are comprehensively developed in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor aspects. They should possess homeland emotions, a healthy personality, an international perspective, craftsmanship spirit, and innovation ability. They should master the basic theories and professional skills of Drama and Film Studies, Journalism and Communication Studies, Arts, and Broadcasting and Television Program Directing. They should possess certain political awareness, theoretical cultivation, and artistic appreciation abilities, as well as good comprehensive qualities. They should be proficient in planning and production techniques and possess strong core abilities in film and television directing, photography and videography, editing, post-production, and new media content creation. They are expected to engage in composite applied positions such as video directing, photography, videography, editing, special effects production, and new media content production and operation in film, television, media, and cultural fields in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, including television stations, online new media platforms, film and television enterprises, advertising companies, and the publicity departments of enterprises and institutions.


Knowledge and Abilities

Professional ethics: Possess a firm and correct political orientation, good ideological and moral character, and a sound personality. Love the country and the people, support the leadership of the Communist Party of China. Have a scientific spirit, humanistic cultivation, cultural taste, professional ethics, and an enterprising spirit. Care about social issues and national development, possess a sense of social responsibility, and actively participate in social practice. Understand national conditions, social conditions, and people's lives, practice socialist core values, and possess a healthy physique and mindset.

Subject knowledge abilities: Possess systematic and solid basic knowledge in Drama and Film Studies, Journalism and Communication Studies, and Arts, as well as interdisciplinary knowledge. Possess professional knowledge and skills in audiovisual content creation. Understand the history, current status, and frontiers of the major and related disciplines. Have an understanding of relevant policies, regulations, and conventions in domestic and international film and television media, as well as the development trends of new media technology and converged media.

Application abilities: Possess cross-domain knowledge integration abilities, able to independently plan and produce audiovisual programs such as television programs, documentaries, microfilms, short videos, advertisements, and online short dramas by comprehensively utilizing relevant knowledge and skills. Possess communication and expression abilities, interview and reporting abilities, and the ability to proficiently use professional equipment such as cameras, videography, recording, and lighting to complete shooting and editing tasks. Have strong audiovisual material synthesis abilities, able to skillfully use professional software such as editing and special effects production to complete post-production and packaging of audiovisual programs. Familiar with the characteristics of different new media platforms and social media platforms, possess new media application abilities and certain operational abilities, and able to create audiovisual converged media content.

Innovation and creativity: Possess creative thinking and innovative abilities in film and television media and audiovisual expression. Have a strong spirit of innovation, entrepreneurship awareness, and certain independent entrepreneurship abilities. Have the ability to digitally inherit and innovate traditional culture, as well as logical thinking abilities, a critical spirit, and a sense of reflection.

Information abilities: Have strong new media and computer application abilities, able to proficiently use common office software and professional software for film and television production. Able to conduct business related to the major through the internet and utilize AI technology to assist in film and television media work.

Communication and expression abilities: Have strong communication and expression abilities, able to use accurate and standardized language and writing to logically express opinions, effectively communicate with peers and the general public, and possess strong promotional and dissemination abilities.

Teamwork abilities: Have strong organizational, coordination, and management abilities, able to harmoniously coexist with team members and collaborate to complete complex tasks.

International perspective: Understand and respect the differences and diversity of world cultures, keep abreast of international developments, pay attention to global major issues in the field of film and television media, possess the ability to conduct international exchanges and cooperation, and promote Chinese excellent culture and wisdom through audiovisual works.

Able to adapt to the needs of social and personal high-level, sustainable development through continuous learning and keep pace with the evolving film and television media environment.

Characteristics of the Broadcasting and Television Directing Major

This major aligns with the industries in the Greater Bay Area, following the OBE (Outcome-Based Education) philosophy of "student-centeredness, output orientation, and continuous improvement." It constructs talent cultivation programs and curricula closely aligned with industrial demands, featuring collaborative training between government, schools, and enterprises.

The major closely integrates with the economic development needs of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Pearl River Delta region. Its curriculum system aligns with the strategic emerging industry of digital creative industries, combining higher education in media with media practice, demonstrating distinctive characteristics as an applied major.

The major possesses fully functional and advanced laboratories funded by the provincial government, including studios, photography studios, recording laboratories, virtual imaging laboratories, etc., emphasizing the cultivation of students' practical creation abilities.

The majority of faculty members possess rich frontline media work experience, forming a "dual-teacher" team with both teaching and practical abilities, as well as "double-high" teachers with overseas study backgrounds.

The major has established close cooperative relationships with many well-known enterprises and institutions such as Hengdian Film and Television City, major television and radio stations in Guangdong, renowned film and television production companies, event planning companies, famous director studios, and film and television cultural communication companies. It adopts a project-based teaching model, allowing students to engage in directing and creation practices in cooperating enterprises and institutions.

The major promotes teaching and learning through competitions. Both faculty and student works have achieved outstanding results in various national and international competitions such as the National College Student Advertising Art Contest, the China Internet+ College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the International College Student Micro-film Festival, the Guangzhou College Student Film Festival, the First Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area College Student Advertising Festival, and the ASEAN International College Student Film Exhibition.

Teaching equipment

Relying on our school's overall design plan for building a "digitalized" and "intelligent" campus and leveraging our provincial-level converged media experimental teaching demonstration center, the Broadcasting and Television Directing major possesses advanced and complete experimental and teaching equipment for photography, videography, recording, post-production, live streaming, and broadcasting. This equipment can well satisfy teaching, experimentation, research, and extracurricular practice.


Laboratories

The Broadcasting and Television Directing major is equipped with professional teaching venues and laboratories such as news studios, recording laboratories, virtual studios, photography studios, and non-linear editing computer rooms, covering a total area of 840 square meters.


Practice bases

The Broadcasting and Television Directing major attaches great importance to the construction and planning of practice bases. It has established cooperative relationships with over ten film and television media enterprises, serving as teaching internship and research bases that can well meet the needs of students' on-the-job internships and graduation internships during their senior year.


Employment Prospects

Graduates of this major are primarily employed in the film, television, media, and cultural fields in Guangdong and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. They engage in positions such as film and television directors, broadcast and television program directors, photographers, videographers, editors, video special effects artists, new media content production and operation in radio and television stations, film and television media enterprises, advertising companies, new media platforms, and the publicity departments of enterprises and institutions.


Faculty Team

The Broadcasting and Television Directing major currently has 11 full-time teachers, including 1 professor, 3 associate professors, 3 lecturers, and 4 teaching assistants. Among them, 4 are "dual-teacher" qualified. 90.09% hold master's degrees or above, and 4 teachers have overseas study experiences. The professional backgrounds of the full-time teachers cover drama and film, communication, Chinese language and literature, and art design, possessing disciplinary backgrounds related to journalism and communication, drama and film studies, and arts. Additionally, the major invites renowned domestic professors and industry experts to serve as mentors.
