Overview:
The Fashion and Clothing Design major aims to cultivate talents who meet the demands of the fashion industry and its development, possess innovative design thinking in fashion art design, adhere to sustainable design concepts, and demonstrate a certain level of design research capability. These individuals should possess creative and practical abilities in fashion and clothing design, master methods for fashion and clothing design as well as brand planning, and possess an international perspective, good teamwork spirit, and social responsibility. They should be able to engage in fashion and clothing design, creative fashion design, cultural innovation and design, product planning and development, fashion planning and management, and other related work in enterprises and institutions in the field of fashion art design. They should also be capable of conducting design research, teaching, and management in art design institutions, demonstrating cross-disciplinary integration and innovation.
Guangdong Province is the largest fashion producer in China, with its total fashion production and export volume ranking first in the country for many years. Its output accounts for about one-fifth of the national total, making the fashion industry one of the strategic pillar industries in the province. Currently, Guangdong has over 50,000 fashion enterprises, including more than 4,000 enterprises of considerable scale. The products cover shirts, suits, fashion wear, denim wear, casual wear, and other categories, forming a relatively complete industrial production system with a considerable scale, and the advantages of industrial clustering development are evident.
In 2023, the "Implementation Opinions on Further Promoting the High-Quality Development of the Textile and Garment Industry" proposed to promote the high-quality development of Guangdong's textile and garment industry cluster towards fashion, high-end, branding, digitalization, intelligence, low-carbon, and internationalization, cultivating a world-class advanced textile and garment industry province. It aims to cultivate famous enterprises and products worth billions of dollars, and build famous districts and cities worth tens of billions of dollars. It promotes full-process digitization, forming a closed data loop from research and development, design, production, quality control, warehousing, logistics, sales, after-sales, and other links, realizing data-driven management in all aspects of production and operation.
With the rapid development of the "Made in China" modern fashion industry, the transformation and upgrading of the fashion industry lack intelligent and information-based talent support based on new technologies such as mobile internet, cloud data, and rapid fashion manufacturing. The fashion industry requires a large number of compound and applied undergraduate talents who can engage in fashion and clothing design, manufacturing, fashion product planning, fashion enterprise management, and possess a certain level of patriotic sentiment, healthy personality, innovation awareness, craftsmanship spirit, international perspective, and practical ability.
Training Objectives:
The major is targeted at the Pearl River Delta region of Guangdong, aiming to cultivate talents who are comprehensively developed in morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor, possess homeland emotion, healthy personality, international perspective, craftsmanship spirit, and innovation ability. They should grasp the basic theories and professional skills of fashion and clothing design, have good aesthetic accomplishment and solid professional knowledge, effective communication skills, and comprehensive quality. These talents should be proficient in fashion product design, fashion trend analysis, marketing management, fashion structure design and craftsmanship, and other techniques, and possess strong fashion brand creation abilities. They can work in well-known fashion brands, fashion design companies, uniform companies, fashion and clothing foreign trade companies, image design companies, marketing companies, fashion media, fashion and clothing design colleges, and other enterprises and institutions related to fashion and fashion communication. Potential job positions include brand fashion designers, high-end custom designers, high-end pattern makers, corporate IE engineering management positions, fashion media positions, and design educators.

They should be able to reasonably select and use modern intelligent tools to express, elaborate, and practice complex design issues such as fashion color, pattern, style, structure, craftsmanship, and marketing management.
Application ability: According to market demand and specific needs, able to use basic methods and techniques of fashion product design and development to form a fashion system design/development plan. Have the ability to plan fashion brands and design fashion products, develop and recreate fashion fabrics, and apply them to fashion design. Demonstrate innovation awareness in system design, unit design, and craftsmanship implementation, while possessing brand planning and company management abilities for modern fashion enterprises.
Innovation ability: Based on mastering the latest professional technology, fashion technology and craftsmanship, and scientific principles, possess the ability to learn across disciplines and professions. Solve theoretical and difficult problems in fashion design. In response to specific characteristics of fashion materials, fashion products, technological processes, production, and marketing, select effective equipment and reasonable craftsmanship techniques using systematic and innovative thinking. Apply scientific methods in the professional field to form personal judgments, insights, or countermeasures, and possess strong innovation and entrepreneurship abilities.
Information ability: Understand the usage principles and methods of commonly used equipment, information technology tools, design tools, and digital virtual fashion design software in the fashion and clothing design major. Able to select appropriate modern information tools and digital virtual fashion design software for product design, development, and promotion to solve digital problems encountered in the field of fashion and clothing design, aiming at issues such as fashion and clothing design product development and design management.
Communication and expression ability: Have strong language expression, information collection and processing, and new knowledge acquisition abilities. Understand the intellectual property and legal norms related to the fashion and clothing industry, as well as the impact of design practice on environmental and social sustainable development. It is also an undergraduate supporting major for the key discipline of "Design Art" in Guangdong Province. The major actively carries out the "Three Connections and Five Integrations" teaching mode. The "Three Connections" refer to connecting general education courses with professional courses, basic professional courses with core professional courses, and fashion and clothing design courses with enterprise project development. The "Five Integrations" refer to the integration of student and designer identities, the integration of design works and products, the integration of design courses and fashion design competitions, the integration of design courses and enterprise projects, and the integration of fashion product planning courses and innovation and entrepreneurship. Students in this major can choose the "2+2" or "3+1.5" dual-degree program with mutual credit recognition between China and Australia. Employment Prospects:
After graduation, students can work in well-known fashion brand design departments, fashion design companies, clothing design companies, renowned clothing or clothing accessories manufacturing enterprises, fashion e-commerce, and other enterprises and institutions, engaging in product development and design, buyer, planning, marketing, e-commerce, and other positions.
