Guangdong Baiyun University is a full-time undergraduate institution committed to cultivating students with solid knowledge and practical capabilities and striving for excellence in application-oriented education and research. It has its root in Guangzhou Baiyun College of Applied Technology, which was initially founded in 1989. A decade’s flourishing development and upgrading earned its official recognition by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China in 1999. In 2005, it was renamed Guangdong Baiyun University (shortened as BaiyunU).
BaiyunU boasts two campuses. The West Campus is situated in Jianggao Town and the North Campus in Zhongluotan University Town, both in Baiyun District of Guangzhou, with a total enrollment of over 33,000 full-time students from major parts of China and more than 1,900 teaching and administrative staff. Both campuses are equipped with e-campuses with gigabit nets, libraries with a total stock of 2.94 million book collections and digital resources, sophisticated laboratories as well as cutting-edge smart classrooms, innovation studios and student workshops, which total over 440. It takes pride in its admirable sports and living facilities. Staff and students have easy access to the standard plastic track-and-field grounds, gymnasiums, tennis courts, basketball arenas, rock climbing gyms and other out-of-door facilities. All dormitories are furnished with water heater, air conditioner and broadband internet access, which combine to create a convenient and comfortable living environment.
A well-developed multi-disciplinary education system is put in place now for BaiyunU’s 16 secondary colleges to deliver 61 programs of undergraduate studies, which cover a wide range of academic areas involving science, engineering, management, economics, arts as well as education, languages and cultures, and to take advantage of cutting-edge teaching, learning and experimental platforms. Its remarkable academic performance is manifest in the government award of China’s Top Ten Private Universities in 2010 among nearly 800 of the same category. It features 3 provincially cultivated key disciplines, 6 provincial-level platforms for scientific research, 15 provincial superior/featured bachelor programs, 6 provincially cultivated first-class bachelor programs, 25 provincial first-class courses, 4 provincial demonstrative centers for experimental teaching, and 1 provincial platform for collaborative education of application-oriented talents, to name just a few.
Over the years, BaiyunU has been trying its best to aim higher by adopting four strategies of development. First, it sticks to enhancing innovative connotation by continuously strengthening capabilities and heightening levels of its teaching, research, staff and administration. Strenuous efforts have been made to achieve “four heights” in course teaching, academic performance, administrative records and social influences. The “3+1” mode of teaching and internships, for example, has been put into operation for years in collaboration with industrial leaders and meticulously selected enterprises. As a result, 12 industry-integrated teaching units, 18 exemplary bachelor programs, 72 jointly developed courses, 1,355 practical teaching bases, 10 platforms for stimulating students’ innovation and entrepreneurship, 1 provincial platform for collaborative education and many others have all played a prominent role in student cultivation and their career development. BaiyunU is awarded the title of “Exemplary Institution of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education for Colleges and Universities” in Guangdong Province.
Second, it sticks to integrating education and industries by linking talent cultivation and industrial frontiers, competence building and experimental opportunities, innovation chains and social services. Between 2020 and 2023 only, BaiyunU students won 379 national awards and 1,987 provincial awards, published 135 academic papers in the name of the first author, and successfully registered 61 patents. BaiyunU remains the most competitive in terms of student employment in South China, with the initial employment rates standing steadily above 96% and the employer satisfaction rate above 95%.
Third, it sticks to cooperating internationally. By actively pursuing the strategic internationalization of education, BaiyunU has extensively engaged in international exchange and cooperation. Currently, it has forged close ties with over 30 universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Japan and South Korea, such as The University of Technology, Sydney, The University of Western Australia, etc. A good number of international projects are under way, including staff and student exchanges, mutual recognition of credits for degree programs, bachelor and master joint programs, and direct undergraduate-to-master’s pathways. It is our firm commitment to provide our staff and students with international opportunities, experience and resources as much as possible.
Finally, it sticks to developing itself through digital empowerment. Digital technologies and resources have been employed in all levels of administration, staff training, classroom teaching, academic research and other campus activities. In so doing, BaiyunU has been awarded the title of “Top Ten Private Universities in Guangdong Province” for a long succession of years. It was selected and recognized early in 2016 as one of the “Pilot Universities for Application-oriented Transformation and Development” in Guangdong Province.
As a pioneer in private university education and a founding member of the Alliance of Chinese Universities (Colleges) of Applied Technology, BaiyunU is acclaimed as the “vanguard” and “banner” of private higher education in China. Over the past years, as in 2023 alone, BaiyunU was rated as the first-class application-oriented university in China by Airuishen Alumni Network Ranking of Chinese Universities, and ranked on top of the “Shanghai Consultancy Ranking of Private Universities in China” list.
