Professional profile

The digital economy has become a new engine for China's economic growth and a key force in implementing major national strategies. Guangdong Province is the largest province in China in terms of economy, manufacturing industry and digital economy. The scale of its digital economy has ranked first in China for five consecutive years. The docking mechanism of digital industries and the acceleration of market-based allocation of data factors are important starting points for China to cultivate world-class digital industrial clusters, and digital economy professionals are urgently needed.

In this context, the Digital economy major of Guangdong Baiyun University came into being. It launched the application for digital economy major in 2021, successfully obtained the approval of the Ministry of Education, and began to enroll students in September 2022. It has become the first digital economy major to enroll students in Guangdong Province. The Digital economy major is a full-time undergraduate major  (4 years, 4-7 years of study), which belongs to the management of the School of Applied Economics, and belongs to the undergraduate major of Applied Economics.  It is an important component and construction major of the "Math IQ professional cluster" of our school, and also the core major of the professional cluster of the School of Applied Economics.


Training objectives

Aiming at the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, this major aims to cultivate composite applied talents who are all-round developed in such areas of morality, intelligence, physique, beauty and labor, have national feeling, healthy personality, international vision, craftsmanship spirit and innovation ability,  master the theoretical system of interdisciplinary knowledge such as economics, mathematical statistics, computer and data science, and have certain economic management and data thinking. The students can have ability to find, independently think and analyze and solve practical problems in the field of digital industrialization and industrial digitization by relying on data science tools and good comprehensive literacy; be proficient in mathematical  statistics software, data collection and mining, deep learning algorithms and other mathematical analysis and digital technologies; have strong ability in economic accounting, data analysis and economic management consulting. Through the education in this programme, they can work in the fields of industrial digitalization and digital industrialization in enterprises, financial institutions, institutions and government departments, including artificial intelligence or digital products and services, digital economic analysis, digital technology and business model integration and innovation, digital governance, data value, industrial digital planning and construction, management consulting and decision-making.


Knowledge and ability

1. Professional quality ability: have a firm and correct political direction, good ideological and moral character and sound personality,  love the  motherland, love the  people, support the leadership of the Communist Party of China; understand the national conditions of the people and social conditions, and practice the core values of socialism; have scientific spirit, humanistic accomplishment, cultural taste and enterprising spirit, and able to spread fine Chinese culture; be concerned about social problems and national development, have a sense of social responsibility, and take the  initiative to  participate  in social  practice;  have good  professional ethics and professionalism,  adhere  to  the  digital  economy  industry  norms  and  social  responsibility requirements.

2. Subject knowledge ability: have interdisciplinary knowledge system, with the necessary tool knowledge, systematic solid basic knowledge, interdisciplinary  knowledge, professional knowledge and professional skills; understand the history, current situation and frontier trends of digital economy major and related disciplines, understand relevant policies, regulations and practices at home and abroad, master the research ideas and research methods of this major, and have the ability to apply interdisciplinary knowledge.

3. Application ability: have the  ability to  integrate interdisciplinary knowledge, be able to comprehensively use theoretical knowledge and skills to analyze and solve complex problems in digital economy or related fields, propose corresponding countermeasures or programs, and analyze its policy basis, social environment and possible social impact; be able to skillfully use digital economic management theory, mathematical statistics technology, data science methods and tools to achieve digital transformation and efficiency improvement for related industries, and be competent for new work in the field of digital product development, digital solutions, digital derivation and data application.

4. Ability to innovate: have logical thinking ability, critical spirit and reflective consciousness, strong innovation and entrepreneurship ability, strong social adaptability, able to use the research ideas and methods of the major to organize and carryout investigations and research, able to discover, discriminate, summarize and evaluate the phenomena and problems of the major and related fields, scientific extraction of problems, systematic expression, summary and demonstration. To form personal judgments, opinions or countermeasures; have the ability to write economic analysis research reports based on algorithm code programming modeling analysis, and be able to creatively solve problems in digital economic activities.

5. Information ability: be able to track the development of science and technology, understand the frontier and development of digital technology, be able to use various information technologies and tools to obtain and analyze relevant information, and be skilled in using various software and online office systems; be able to use relevant models for analysis and judgment; be able to use information technology to solve practical problems in the field.

6. Communication skills: have strong communication skills, be able to use accurate and standardized language, logical and clear expression of views, be able to communicate effectively with peers and the public, with a certain degree of  publicity and communication ability; master a foreign language, have basic listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating skills, and be able to carryout cross-cultural communication.

7. Teamwork ability: have strong organization, coordination and management ability, able to work harmoniously with team members to complete complex tasks; have a strong ability to adapt to cross-disciplinary environment, can adapt to multi-cultural team cooperation.

Digital economy professional features

This major connects with the industries of the Greater Bay Area, follows the OBE concept of "student-centered, output-oriented and continuous improvement", and closely follows the needs of the industry to build talent training programs and curriculum systems, and cooperate with the government, schools and enterprises in training.

To form a "science and practice integration" curriculum system of three specialized and one comprehensive, and to create a practical education system of "one point, two wheels and five drives".

1. Humanities, science and engineering: Pay attention to the interdisciplinary knowledge learning of economics, mathematical statistics and computer technology, cultivate the ability of economic thinking + mathematical modeling analysis + software language programming, and respond to the demand for composite economic talents under the new situation.

2. Integration of production and education, internal and external collaboration: the implementation of school-enterprise collaboration "3+1" education, through classroom teaching + extracurricular competition + off-campus practice of trinity training, deepen the integration with the industry, pay attention to students practice hands-on and professional post ability training.

3. Integrated curriculum, module design: pay attention to the internal logical relationship between knowledge system and post ability, modular design, interdisciplinary co-construction of integrated course group, docking vocational skills  certificate  examination,  innovation  and entrepreneurship project declaration, progressive and coherent to undertake post delivery tasks.

Microeconomics,  Macroeconomics,  Digital  Economics,  Statistics,  Digital  Decision  Analysis, Econometrics I, Digital Economy investigation and Analysis, SQL Economic Database programming, Python Economic Data Mining Elementary, Python Economic Data Modeling Advanced, Business Intelligence (BI) analysis.


Practical teaching session

Campus concentrated practical teaching session:  digital  economy  survey  training,  database application training, digital economy comprehensive training based on big data, digital economy modeling training, campus simulation comprehensive practice, enterprise practice teaching course design.

Enterprise practice teaching projects and  main contents: According to the actual  needs of students to  participate in the  actual business in the field  of digital  economy  and expand professional frontier  knowledge, six enterprise  practice teaching  projects  including  online self-learning  expansion  module  course, professional morality education, field research, production (professional) practice, graduation practice and graduation thesis are set up. In the process of enterprise practice teaching, the synergistic effect of professional tutors, thesis tutors, enterprise tutors, vocational tutors and ideological and political tutors will be fully brought into play to jointly help students expand their professional abilities and improve their professional qualities.


Teaching conditions


1. Teaching equipment

Relying overall design plan of Guangdong Baiyun University to build a "digital" and "intelligent" campus, this major has fully functional teaching facilities and equipment, including statistics professional laboratories, to  ensure students' classroom learning and after-school practice.


2. Laboratory

Digital Economy Experiment Teaching Center  and Statistics  Laboratory  are one of the four laboratories of Guangdong Baiyun University's Economic and Management Experiment Center. Excel, SPSS, R, Python, Stata, SAS and other experimental statistical software have been fully installed. At present, it mainly undertakes the experimental teaching tasks of 5 experimental courses, such as "Time series analysis", "Data Processing Technology (SPSS)", "Comprehensive experiment of Statistics Specialty", "Comprehensive Practical training  of Statistics", and "R Language Foundation". The proposed courses include "Python language Application", "S-PLUS Application Statistical Analysis",  "Basic Application  of SQL  Database"  and  "Digital  System Development", etc.


3. Practice base

The digital economy  major attaches great  importance to the construction and  planning of experimental bases. At present, a total of 2 student practice projects have successfully settled in the innovation and entrepreneurship practice base of college students; And has established off-campus intern training bases with many well-known enterprises such as Guangzhou Tedi Intelligent Technology Co., LTD., Shenzhen Dimension Data Co., LTD., Nanhu CITS, etc., which better meet the needs of students' production practice and graduation practice during their senior year.

At present, the digital economy has become a new engine for China's economic growth. China's digital economy is booming, expanding in scale and deepening in application. It has increasingly become a key engine to drive economic growth and promote high-quality economic development. It also provides a broad space and platform for students majoring in digital economy.

The digital economy major itself is an interdisciplinary discipline, which will focus on cultivating compound talents with deep digital literacy, economic literacy and management literacy. The main employment fields of graduates of this major include digital industrialization (including digital governance + data value) and industrial digitalization. Based on the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater  Bay Area, it is targeted at real economy enterprises, economic management/(industry supervisor) departments at all levels, financial institutions, institutions and state organs in the field of industrial digitalization and digital industrialization. Engaged in digital products and services, digital economy analysis, digital technology and business model integration and innovation, digital governance, data value, industrial digital  planning and construction, management consulting and  decision-making  positions; Or enter colleges and universities, scientific research institutes engaged in digital economy teaching and research work. At present, the scale and comprehensive development level of the digital economy in Guangdong Province leads the country. The  linkage development of the cities  in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area urban agglomeration continues. The gap of applied talents in digital industrialization and industrial digitalization continues to widen, and the employment prospects are broad.


Teaching staff

At present, there are 19 professional teachers and 10 enterprise teachers. Their majors cover economics, statistics, computer science, data science, etc. Among them, there are 10 senior professional titles and 6 intermediate professional titles; There are 4 doctors and 15 masters. Introduce and cultivate high-level discipline leaders, and employ industry experts as corporate practice mentors. Establish a linkage mechanism of teacher training combining schools, industries and enterprises, and create a unique team of "double-qualified" teachers for the training of application-oriented talents.
